Red Wine Hot Chocolate

Red wine and rich chocolates have long been known to make an excellent pair, so why not get fun with it? As mentioned in previous blogs, many studies have shown reason to believe that red wine can help lower cholesterol and regulate blood pressure, but did you know that dark chocolate may also be a contender in the fight against coronary diseases? Dark chocolate contains an array of flavanoids and compounds that may improve the flow of blood in arteries to help decrease blood pressure.

Ingredients: 2 Servings

  • 1 1/2cups milk (any milk is fine)
  • 2oz semi-sweet baking dark chocolate bar
  • 3/4cup red wine (use something fruity such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, or Merlot)
  • 1tbsp cocoa powder
  • 2-3tbsp sugar
  • 1tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4tsp cinnamon
  • whipped cream for topping

Instructions:

  1. Heat up milk in a sauce pot over medium heat.
  2. Chop the chocolate bar into small pieces and add it to the milk.
  3. Use a fine strainer or a mesh sugar shaker to sift in cocoa powder into the pot with milk. This is to ensure that there are no clumps.
  4. Add sugar, vanilla extract, red wine, and cinnamon. Whisk everything together slowly and continue whisking as chocolate melts.
  5. When milk starts to simmer, lower the heat to medium-low and continue to cook for a couple more minutes. Slowly stir a few times while it’s cooking.
  6. Divide hot chocolate among 2 mugs and serve it with some whipped cream on top.
